Selina is a locally produced tv series that is centered around a young woman called Selina from the village who comes to work in the city. It is a very captivating show with themes of family, money and love. It stars the very talented Celestine Gachuhi as Selina and the ever so handsome Pascal Tokodi as Nelson Mackenzie. It is a fast paced tv drama that airs on Maisha Magic East . I for one am completely in love with this show.
Things that I love:
The Characters:
1. Celestine Gachuhi as Selina
Being the titular character Selina, Celestine does an amazing job. I love how she balances the many sides of Selina and still makes her very charming. I really loved the character growth of Selina , she went from a somewhat pushover to a fierce lady who knows what she wants and how to get it. I feel like Celestine is very authentic in her acting and her way of relaying emotions is smooth. I cannot wait to see more growth from Selina , very excited.
2. Pascal Tokodi as Nelson Mackenzie;
Oh my! Where to start with Pascal Tokodi?? I could spend an entire day talking about how yummy Pascal Tokodi is but for now let’s focus on his acting. Nelson is a standout character for me. I have been a fan of Pascal’s acting for a while especially his latest Kalamu na Ndeng’a short film. In this series .
Pascal does not disappoint at all. He portrays Nelson as a charismatic, kind, polite, humane, funny character that just oozes of charm. His acting is authentic staying true to Nelson’s general character and personality. Nelson has also had some substantial amount of character growth which aids in spicing up the drama. I really appreciate the direction the writers are steering this character towards, amazing.
3. Helen Keli as Patricia Mackenzie:
Patricia Mackenzie, head of the Mackenzie house is a character you take quite some time to understand, initially. I really enjoy this character because of layered she is. Helen Keli is a very talented actress who really brings our the raw side of Patricia Mackenzie. When you first encounter Patricia Mackenzie , you might dislike her as she is painted as an alcoholic and a horrible mother but later on as the show progresses you get to understand her.I really enjoyed her character development , it was well paced. I lok forward to seeing more from her.
4. Wakio Mzenge as Kristina:
Now this was the best standout character in this series. We all just love to hate Kristina. Her character is the evil stepmother who tries to ruin Selina just to fully get her husband’s attention. She is evil, cunning and even goes to the extent to use witchcraft. Her character is very important in the story development and adds to the drama. Wakio Mzenge is an amazing actress and really stands out in this one. I feel like she is the best Kenyan actress I have encountered so far. Please watch this series to understand just how good her acting is. She left me amazed the whole season . I really look forward to the direction her character will take in season 2.
5. Sangale Eunice as Lily:
If a villain character makes me hate them so much, the actor is doing an amazing job. Lily is a mean , nasty, jealous and cunning character who works in the Mackenzie house and is out to make Selina’s life a living hell. I loved her acting , it was really effortless and authentic. As a character Lily had a small influence on the story development but I feel like in the ending ,her character played a huge role in the drama.I really appreciate what her character brings to the series . It is quite enjoyable to watch her antics.
The Relationships
1. Nelson and Selina
They are the main couple in this show . We get a really well paced, realistic and elaborate relationship build up. Celestine and Pascal have really good chemistry that really pays off well on their characters relationship. The show does an amazing job on telling the different sides of their relationship from their epic meeting in episode one to their flourishing love in episode 60. I really enjoy this relationship , it was fun to watch.
2 .Selina and Patricia Mackenzie:
Selina and Patricia have a well put blossoming friendship over the series run. l love how both characters compliment and feed off each other. Both the character development of Selina and Patricia is very vital to the story and is fueled by their teamwork and friendship. Patricia, who comes of as a snobbish character is softened and humanized by Selina. I know they will become a very strong and powerful duo.
3. Selina and her father:
This relationship is very innocent, a father who loves and believes in his daughter and a daughter who adores and is loyal to her dad. This relationship set the mood for the whole series . Selina’s father may be blinded by his wife’s lies but still shows concern towards Selina through out whatever situation. I find this relationship to be very interesting, warm and authentic.
4. Patricia and her mother:
When we first meet Patricia’s mother it magically explains Patricia’s issues to us. Her mother is simply a bully. She weirdly enjoys putting down her daughter all the time.It is quite a sad relationship honestly as Patricia tries her best to please her mother all the time but unfortunately she never meets her expectations. This relationship makes you empathize with Patricia despite her snobbish attitude. I really appreciate that the writers and directors highlighted tis relationship as it was an important backstory .
Zoe and Reagan’s Coup d’etat:
In episode 42 we see Zoe and Reagan take over the house and the family company. This for me was sort of the climax of the series as all characters developed around this saga. Though it is a bit puzzling as to why Zoe and Reagan had to sort of steal the company from Patricia yet they were the only ones actively involved in running it .It is somewhat of a plot-hole to me but I will just blow it off as greed. Anyway, this event shook everybody’s stand and put most characters out of their comfort zone hence instigating character development. I for one loved how Patricia and Nelson got to really rise above from this occurrence. It was well paced and I look foward to seing how Zoe and Reagan handled it. Zoe and Reagan have really good chemistry and it helped make their antics smooth .
Themes:
a) Family
The concept and theme of family is very dominant in the show. No family is perfect and the show goes on to prove just that. We all have ups and down as a family and it is expected to be that way. The Mackenzies being the main family go through so many tough times but still try their best to stay together. Except for Reagan who is a rich spoilt man with so much unnecessary greed.
b)Â Money and Greed:
The theme is evident especially with characters like Kristina and Lily. Kristina sells of her step daughter to go work in the city just to get all of her husbands attention. Her actions are so absurd considering she had to use witchcraft to achieve that.
Lily on the other hand is completely obsessed with the rich, wanting to be one of them through whatever means.
Collette , Nelson’s ex-fiancee , literally leaves him on the altar just because they lost all their fortune. I really never liked Collette’s character at all. She was too phony and materialistic. I also feel like the actress who plays Collette did not give her all in potraying the character, it always felt a bit forced.Reagan and Zoe also go an extra mile of making their family memebers suffer just because of money and power. They team up to torment their family making sure they do not recover from the damage.
c) Love:
From the beginning of the show we see just how strong the bond is between Selina and her father is. The love Zakayo has for his daughter makes it impossible for him to see Selina doing wrong. He supports and cares for Selina alot. I like this kind of love ,it portrays family love .
The blossoming love betwen Nelson and Selina is also quite captivating. It is raw, honest love that is sincere and genuine. I really enjoyed their love-line.
The Directing:
This show’s directing was quite outstanding. I love how they took ample time to set every scene. The directing was thorough making the set scene feel authentic. Rueben Odanga did an amazing job especially with bringing out amazing scenery.
Thoughts on the ending:
The ending of season 1 was very eventful and full of suspense. The drama build up was very interesting and we are all eager to now what will happen next. I really look forward to more character development especially the relationship between Nelson and Selina. The ending was very appropriate, I loved it.
Final Verdict:
Selina is a properly paced Kenyan TV drama that features interesting themes of love, greed and power. It is very intruiging and always leaves you wanting more.
