What’s in my bag

I am so excited to finally share what is in my bag. I have items that I surely cannot survive without and I am glad to be able to share them with you today.

I have a Denri leather bag and I love it so much. It is made of really great quality leather. And of course I have it in green as it is my favorite color. So today I would like to share it’s contents that I use on a daily.

First of the bag comes with compartments. The compartment section is removable. It is really helpful when it comes to organisation and neatness.

The compartment sections really help me in creating a place for everything. Especially small stuff like keys which can get lost easily.

I like to divide my things. It makes it easier to find things. It also really saves up on space. I like it because it makes it easier to transfer into another bag.

I like the system of organization I have in my bag, it works for me.

Toiletry bag

I got this little Ankara bag from Hilton Arcade for 200Ksh and it has really served me well. I love it’s shape and size, it saves up space while storing a lot. Here I keep my things like lip balm, lipstick, sanitizer, hand lotion, chewing gum and pocket tissues. It really makes them accessible. My wet wipes are huge so I keep them separately. I honestly go everywhere with this bag, it really serves me well.

Books

I go everywhere with these three. First of is my planner ,I love this planner because I customized it myself so it works well for me and my schedule. I also carry my small Bible. So I can do my Bible study wherever I can. It really helps with my faith. I then always carry the book I am currently reading. I am currently reading ‘How to win friends and influence people’ It is a really interesting book.

Others:

Hydration is really important to me so I always carry a bottle of water. It helps me reach my daily hydration goals. My wallet is another important thing, especially for my cards and receipts , though I am a huge receipts hoarder. I seasonally carry my umbrella when the weather becomes unpredictable. Helps me avoid emergencies.

I really love the organization system I have for my bag. I also add some things depending on my schedule and day activities.

I hope you enjoy this post. I am really loving my Denri bag ,it has got me through some tough times. It is totally worth it.

Have a lovely weekend.

Cheers.

Plan B Kenyan Movie Review

Well this movie is seriously trending in Kenya right now and creating lots of buzz. I for one was really excited to see it. It has a very talented producer LowlaDee with a great ensemble cast. This film is about a young lady played by Sarah Hassan ,who after been heartbroken has a one night stand with a stranger and gets pregnant. She then tries to track down the father of her baby and tries to get him involved in her child’s life and they end up falling in love.

Well I hate to be a buzzkill but I was really disappointed by this film. I had major hopes in it but it did not turn out as I hoped. I will explain why later. Now let’s get to the review.

Stuff I loved :

1. Sarah Hassan as Lisa Waweru

I have never seen Sarah Hassan in any film other than the Tahidi High show. I have to admit ,she is a really good actress. I honestly did not expect much from her in fear of disappointment but she really shocked me. She really solidifies Lisa as a character and she adds a little spice to make her more relatable. I loved how calm Lisa was as a character. Sarah did an amazing job. I liked Lisa as a character so much she felt authentic and believable. Her emotions were well layered making her personality quite pleasing. I am very grateful that Sarah Hassan played Lisa ,this role really suited her. Very charming, bubbly and quite smart. The director and writer did so well with Lisa as a character and Sarah as an actress. I was very much impressed.

2. Catherine Kamau Karanja as Joyce

I was really relying on Catherine to keep me glued to the entire film and she did exactly that. As I have expressed before, I love Catherine Kamau’s acting, she always does a phenomenal job. In this film she plays Joyce , Lisa’s best friend who helps Lisa track down her baby daddy and get justice. She hands down stole the show. Her strong personality really plays well as characters and I am loving the direction of her career. She also provided most if not all the comedy in this show. I can not wait for her to star in her own movie. I am also very fearful she might get typecast as the crazy best friend since she does that so well. I am really looking forward to her headlining a film. Anyway, she made this film enjoyable but still could not save it from the plotholes. I am really proud of her, she is really soaring as an actress. Great job.

3. Daniel Ettim Effiong as Dele Coker

First let us appreciate how handsome this man is. Serious eye candy. This is the first time I have seen Daniel in a film and he did leave a good impression. He plays Dele with ease, not too cocky and not too nice, the perfect rich guy. He really suited the Romantic Comedy actor role. I also did not have much expectation about his acting but he did amazing. The film barely had any character growth but I felt some growth in his character and I really liked it. It made the love story more authentic. I look forward to seeing more films from him. He did great.

The directing

Lowla Dee is amazing. If you haven’t watched the ‘This is it’ web series please do. Considering she is only 28 she has done amazing in her career. I loved how she directed this film. I feel like she set each mood and environment. The acting was also really good. She created a very entertaining romantic comedy, with creative cliche. I was really impressed with the directing.

Stuff I did not like

The Plotholes

Well I understand that the film was only 60 minutes hence they were working within a time frame but I still feel like they could have avoided the Plotholes. Well the story is great but the Plotholes made everything feel rushed . There was no character build up which was very disappointing. Honestly the entire story was already shown in the first 20 minutes, the rest was just stretched out storylines to accumulate to 60 minutes. I would have loved more background stories, well pacing and story build up. I feel like LowlaDee was in a rush, and I was so sad, as I knew how amazing the story was. The plotholes made the film feel a bit empty. I would have loved to see more of their love story, like a real, raw representation of a solid love line. I know Lowla Dee has great talent and potential but I feel like in this film she did not give her best.

The Kenyan Film industry is really growing and I know we can and will do better.

Final Verdict

The film was not bad, it just left me a bit disappointed. I will still recommend it though. Being Kenya’s first Romantic Comedy, it did well.

Hoping to see more from Sarah Hassan. I was impressed.

The film is available on YouTube so please watch it if you haven’t. Support our own.

Cheers.

My Favorite Young Adult Books of all time

I am a huge bookworm. I love to read a lot, from novels to articles to magazines. I have been a major bookworm for the longest time. Reading makes me happy. Growing up, I really found comfort in books especially Young Adult books since they were relatable and entertaining. So today I would like to share with you my favorite Young Adult books of all time. Enjoy.

1. Harry Potter series

These are legit the best books I have encountered in my life. Harry Potter never gets old to me. I have read and re-read them several times and I still cannot have enough. These books were my best friends. I have taken them everywhere with me. If you have not yet read any Harry Potter book ,you should.

It is not only about magic,it is about love, family and friendship. It’s teaches us on the immense power of those three. I am really grateful to JK Rowling for writing these books, she saved so many childhoods.

Everytime I hear the word Harry Potter , my heart lights up. These books are real gems. Still waiting for my Hogwarts letter though. Lol.

2. The Hunger Games

I am a sucker for a strong female character and this book gave me exactly that. Katniss Everdeen is the perfect heroine. The Hunger Games is set in a post apocalyptic where they live separately according to factions. They then hold games annually where people hunt each other down just for entertainment. The story follows Katniss and her friends who fight against the capital and seek justice and equality of the factions. This book was really amazing, it had a compelling story and a true alpha female character.

Talking about it makes me want to read it again. I absolutely adore these book series they are priceless.

3. The fault in our Stars

This book made me cry so much. It’s story taught me so much about gratitude and living the best life I can each day. This book is not your average Cancer story. It is about so much more.

This book gave me joy, real raw joy. The book also had some of the greatest quotes I have ever heard about. I really appreciate the message of this novel.

It is very unique. Hazel Grace and Augustus Waters will forever live in our hearts.

4. Eleanor and Park

This book is a hidden gem. Such a unique and compelling young adult story. I love the love story between Eleanor and Park. It is on another level. I remember reading it in one night, I just could not sleep without finishing it. This book will forever be stuck in my mind, it is one of those novels you thank God you discovered. If you haven’t read this book, read it. Best young love story ever.

5. The Darkest Powers Series

There are so many YA books about the supernatural but this series stand out. It uniquely combines necromancers , were wolves , witches and wizards. I for one love the character growth in this series. The book is really well written. Especially the love story, Chloe and Derek made me smile the entire series. It is not a super popular book but it is worth the time. I myself have read it several times, the story just gets more interesting every time.

I hope you enjoyed my list of YA books. I have read and loved so many YA books but these are the ones I hold most dear. Books light up my world. Reading is part of my self care. You can check out these books if you haven’t already done so. They also make good gifts. Enjoy.

My Favorite Sauti Sol Songs

IMG_20190206_091902Sauti Sol are Kenyan musical giants. They have revolutionized Kenyan Music. Their music has been amazing from the word go. Sauti Sol have made hits after hits after hits. They are among the biggest African musicians and have been in the game for more than 10 years.Like almost everyone else I was introduced to Sauti Sol through Patricia Kihoro when she covered their song ‘Lazizi’ . I immediately fell in love with them. They have also made the genre of ‘Afro Pop’ more mainstream.

IMG_20190206_091929Sauti Sol saved my 2017. I was sad and depressed after being suspended from University when my best friend invited me to their concert. That was one of the best decisions of my life. I fought my way to the front row , sang along to all their songs , tears of joy were flowing freely and when Bien Barasa removed his shirt I legit lost my mind. So basically Bien saved my 2017. LOL Still one of the best experiences of my life.

Anyway they just released their 4th studio album titled ‘Afrikan Sauce’ and it comprises of their recent hit songs.IMG_20190206_091834The album is amazing. I love the direction their musical career is heading. So in the spirit of enjoying their magical talent I decided to compile a list of my favorite Sauti Sol songs.

1. Afrikan Star featuring Burna Boy:

IMG_20190206_092052I love Sauti Sol so much for how they praise and show love to the African Woman in their songs. They take their powerful vocals, amazing collaborations, striking lyrics and give us pure magic. The song glorifies the African woman for their rawness and beauty even their natural hair. As an African woman myself this song gives me so much joy and love. Burna Boy also did an amazing job on this song. I absolutely love it.

2. Sura yako:

IMG_20190206_092110This is officially the Ruracio anthem in Kenya. This song does not age at all, it sounds fresher every time you hear it. If you attend a Ruracio and this song is not played, the event is incomplete. The song pays homage to the African culture by highlighting our marriage traditions. It is also very hype and danceable . I love it. A huge bonus is Chimano’s baritone, honestly his voice is a rare gift. This song is a timeless piece. It will forever make my favorites list.

3. Melanin featuring Patoranking:

IMG_20190206_091948This is yet another song that praises and shows love to the African woman. This song has a really positive message and was the best song of 2017. Considering the constant pressure on African women to bleach their skin this song goes ahead to dispute that and praise the dark melanin rich skin. The song highlights the melanin of the African woman as a gift to be treasured. The message is very positive and uplifting . We are melanin queens and this song adds emphasis to that. Thanks to Sauti Sol and Patoranking for showing love to all the melanin queens , the raw and beautiful African women.

4. Tujiangalie featuring Nyashinski:

IMG_20190206_092013Another hit from Sauti Sol with a powerful message . The song highlights the political and social issues facing Kenya as a country. It is a thought provoking song that is deep. I love how Sauti Sol use their talent and platform to encourage change in the society. Of late, the high rates of corruption cases and social political injustices is at a high in the country and this song encourages conversations about these issues. I am a fan of Nyashinski , his clever lyrics push the message of the song. The song addresses issues that we Kenyans face and would like to see change . It is an amazing piece , I honestly love it so much. The catchy lyrics got me singing along all the time.

5. Nishike:

IMG_20190206_092217Everytime I see Bien’s body roll at minute 0:48 in the music video it legit  makes my heart skip a beat.

IMG_20190206_165020This song is so groovy with the appropriate sexual hints. Our very own Kenyan baby-making song. LOL. I love the tempo of this song, it is slow and perfectly sultry. The video was also a win for me , we are so used to the sexualization of women in music videos but in this video we women get to ogle. On another note, I was shocked and impressed to learn that Kagwe Mungai  produced the song. Mad talent. The vocals here do not disappoint. It was a sexy and sultry side of Sauti Sol we needed to see.

6. Kuliko Jana featuring Redfourth Chorus:

IMG_20190206_092032This is another song with a strong message. The song is spiritual and Sauti Sol do justice to it. I for one love the blend of Redfourth Chorus with Sauti Sol. The song puts you in a worship mood . It speaks of God’s love and grace which is sufficient, His love is renewed each day. Though they faced a bit of backlash for singing gospel music as secular artists. I honestly think they did an amazing job, they used their musical talent to praise and glorify the Lord. This song is beyong amazing.

Sauti Sol have made a huge unforgettable impact on the music industry. They are musical giants and I really look forward to see more hits from them. Making this list was actually really hard, I love all their songs. Sauti Sol is an amazing group , they have achieved so much and they still keep growing. I am a huge fan.

IMG_20190206_174634I hope you enjoyed my list of favorite songs from Sauti Sol. Support Kenyan artists , play some Sauti Sol.

Cheers.

My Current Skin Care Routine

IMG_20190204_165537.jpgGrowing up, I have always had problematic skin. I had rashes , eczema , some whiteheads and my skin was always oily. It was really frustrating to me and I tried everything to fix my skin. After years of trying and failing I finally found a solution. I quit dairy and got a skin care routine that worked for me. Those two changes worked amazingly for my skin. I have oily skin and now I can comfortably say that my skin is doing just fine.

So today I would like to share with you my skin care routine. I took time to learn my skin type and also what my skin likes and does not like. I then built and rebuilt my skin care routine until it became a constant skin care routine that worked perfectly for me.

Morning Routine:

When I wake up I take my lemon water before eating anything else . Lemon water is a really good detoxifying agent and cleanser. It works wonders for the skin. As I take my shower, I wash my face with raw black African soap.

IMG_20190204_165857I get my raw black African soap from Halisi naturals for only 4ooksh. Black African soap is a really good organic cleanser . It works very well for sensitive skin like mine and reduces oily skin. I love how raw and natural it is, as it doesn’t contain any harsh chemicals. After that , I like to air dry my face. After my face is dry, I like to spray Rose water on my face as a toner.

IMG_20190204_170045Rose Water helps in cleaning pores and controls excess oil. Rose water has really helped my skin , I do not think I can do without it. I let my face air dry again and then I moisturize my face with Arimis.

IMG_20190204_165652Arimis is a holy grail. It is an underdog that has really helped many. I do not think there is a Kenyan household that doesn’t have Arimis. It is initially supposed to be used during milking of cows but we discovered how amazing it is for skin. It does not contain harsh chemicals and that is what makes it a favorite for most of us. It is also very affordable and also lasts very long. It really keeps my face moisturized and doesn’t make my skin super oily. After that I go ahead and do my makeup routine. Since I have oily skin I always make sure most of my makeup products have SPF 15 and above.

Night Routine :

My skin care routine at night majorly focuses on removal of makeup. I first apply Arimis petroleum jelly to break down the makeup as most of it is matte. I then go in with a wet wipe to remove the makeup.

IMG_20190204_170133The wet wipes are gentle on the skin and also moisturize the skin in the process. I love how fast makeup wipes remove the makeup and they always leave my skin feeling fresh.

I then go in with my raw black African soap to really remove any remaining makeup on my skin. After that I go in with my Garnier even and matte cleanser  using my spin brush to remove any makeup that might still be on.IMG_20190204_165956IMG_20190204_165803The spin brush also massages your skin as it removes dead skin cells  to improve your skin tone. The Garnier cleanser also works magic . It is thorough while still being gentle. I really value this step in my skin care routine. After that I tone using Rose Water and moisturize using Arimis . That’s it.

IMG_20190204_175241The skin is the largest organ in the body. It really reacts to every way we treat our body and system. My it be diet, hygiene , exercise, lots of things may affect your skin. I love to treat my skin well, so as to feel great. It is part of my skin care routine that is dear and important to me.

There are a couple of things you can change to help your skin be healthier. Reduce dairy intake , regularly cleaning your pillowcase, drinking lots of water, avoid sugar and fatty meals, just to name a few. I really hope this helps you build a skin care routine that works well for you.

Self care is self love.

Cheers.

My Favorite Kericho Gold Tea Flavors

IMG_20190201_165550I became obsessed with tea just a couple of months ago. I was diagnosed with lactose intolerance and I needed something to make me look forward to breakfast every morning. So I got into flavored teas. Kericho Gold is a Kenyan Tea company that has been making us amazing tea for ages.

IMG_20190201_165732The flavored teas have really come as a blessing to most of us , made tea time so much more interesting. I really appreciate the flavored tea as they help me in curbing most of my cravings. Now tea time is my favorite pass time.

1. Strawberry and Vanilla Flavor:

IMG_20190201_165757This is my all time, ultimate favorite flavored Kericho Gold tea. First of all, it is naturally sweet , so no need for sugar. The strawberry flavor taste is not too overpowering, it is toned down by the vanilla, making the flavor soft and easy on the nose. I really love this flavor , it is amazing.

2. Apple and Cinnamon flavor :

IMG_20190201_165821This is another Kericho Gold flavored tea that is dear to me.The combination of the two flavors was very well executed, an odd combination but these two go so well together. Here the apple flavor softens the cinnamon. The stronger scent is the apple while the cinnamon has the stronger taste. I really love this tea, this combination works so well for me. It is very calming after a long day. Love it.

3. Vanilla Flavor:

IMG_20190201_165937The vanilla flavor is such a captivating one. I love it because the flavor lasts longer hence you can use the tea bag more than once. It is also very calming and goes quite well with a good book. I really appreciate the effects of this flavor, the vanilla is not strong but it lasts. It is a classic flavor.

4. Pineapple and Mango Flavor :

IMG_20190201_165907I honestly love every flavor combination that Kericho Gold comes up with that I have ever tasted. I feel like they are very well executed, with such amazing balance.I love this flavor because of the chemistry of both flavors , they work so well together. This tea makes me so happy, it is such a lively flavor. The fruity scent is really captivating, leaves you wanting more and more of it. It is an incredible flavor.

5. Passion and Lime Flavor :

IMG_20190201_165844If you know me know me, you know how much I love passion flavor in everything. This tea really captivated me because of the blend of the two flavors. The lime flavor is the stronger scent while the passion flavor is stronger on taste. I am really impressed with this tea, the passion flavor especially goes so well with the lime. I love this tea while watching messy reality shows . I mean, this tea and ‘tea’ go so well together. LOL.

Hope you enjoyed my list of favorite tea flavors from Kericho Gold. Have a lovely weekend and have some some tea.Cheers.

January Music Playlist (Kenyan)

Well, I have to say, this January has gone faster than expected and we had amazing music to keep us company through it. The songs on my list are not necessarily new, they just really made my January more bearable. The songs are all local obviously , supporting our own.

1. Steph Mumbi – Madem wa Nairobi:

IMG_20190129_223556.jpg We all know Steph Mumbi as the girl on our Safaricom App but she also doubles up as an amazing singer.

IMG_20190129_223054.jpgMadem wa Nairobi has amazing beats and simple catchy lyrics. I for one love the musical dialogue , makes it more intriguing. It was the perfect song for handling all the January vibes.

2. Wangechi – Jera ft Zenchkiid:

img_20190129_223125The very talented Wangechi has been on the Kenyan airwaves for a while. Her style of Hip Hop is unique and she regularly incorporates her vernacular Kikuyu language. Jera is no different . The song samples a traditional Kikuyu song which makes a really good background for her smooth rapping.

IMG_20190129_223142.jpgThe  Kikuyu beat is really groovy , makes an amazing chill song. My January was really hype thanks to this song.

3. Wakadinali – Kuenda na Mimi ft Ares66:

img_20190129_233627Wakadinali hold a special place in my heart . Their quality of music is really unique. For this song they teamed up with their producer Ares66 and created a banger.  I feel like this song has a different sound from their other songs. It sounds more like the mainstream Kapuka. It is very catchy , smooth and really has a chill vibe. I am really impressed with Wakadinali , they still stayed true to their style of rap while embracing a different sound.

4. Bridget Blue – Different:

img_20190129_223207Bridget  Blue has seriously been the biggest blessing to the Kenyan music industry in the past decade. Her voice is amazing. She recently got signed at Kaka Empire and I am loving how they are steering her talent. This song was her first song and it is a really good RnB song. Her vocals in this song are beyond amazing, leaves you wanting more.

img_20190129_223225This song was a really good song for those days you need a song to sing a long to. It is very emotional and deep. Bridget Blue is mad talented and this song is solid gold.

5. Marianne Mandy – Nipe Mfano:

img_20190129_223253Marianne Mandy really outdid herself on this song. Nipe Mfano was her first song and it was an amazing song. It is an afro fusion song that is really catchy, slow and makes an amazing sing along. The lyrics are catchy and relatable. Nipe Mfano is a song , where one is asking the lover or partner on how they want to be loved. I really enjoy this song, it has been on my playlist on repeat.

I hope you liked my list of songs . Be sure to check them out. I hope your January  was amazing. Cheers.

Selina Tv Series Review Season 1

Screenshot_2019-01-19-19-37-38-00.pngSelina is a locally produced tv series that is centered around a young woman called Selina from the village who comes to work in the city. It is a very captivating show with themes of family, money and love. It stars the very talented Celestine Gachuhi as Selina and the ever so handsome Pascal Tokodi as Nelson Mackenzie. It is a fast paced tv drama that airs on Maisha Magic East . I for one am completely in love with this show.

Things that I love:

The Characters:

1. Celestine Gachuhi as Selina

Screenshot_2019-01-22-16-58-08-70.pngBeing the titular character Selina, Celestine does an amazing job. I love how she balances the many sides of Selina and still makes her very charming. I really loved the character growth of Selina , she went from a somewhat pushover to a fierce lady who knows what she wants and how to get it. I feel like Celestine is very authentic in her acting and her way of relaying emotions is smooth. I cannot wait to see more growth from Selina , very excited.

2. Pascal Tokodi as Nelson Mackenzie;

Screenshot_2019-01-22-16-48-32-81.png

Oh my! Where to start with Pascal Tokodi?? I could spend an entire day talking about how yummy Pascal Tokodi is but for now let’s focus on his acting. Nelson is a standout character for me. I have been a fan of Pascal’s acting for a while especially his latest Kalamu na Ndeng’a short film. In this series .Screenshot_2019-01-25-11-47-27-61.png

Pascal does not disappoint at all. He portrays Nelson as a charismatic, kind, polite, humane, funny character that just oozes of charm. His acting is authentic staying true to Nelson’s general character and personality. Nelson has also had some substantial amount of character growth which aids in spicing up the drama. I really appreciate the direction the writers are steering this  character towards, amazing.

3. Helen Keli as Patricia Mackenzie:screenshot_2019-01-19-19-41-34-98

Patricia Mackenzie, head of the Mackenzie house is a character you take quite some time to understand, initially. I really enjoy this character because of layered she is. Helen Keli is a very talented actress who really brings our the raw side of Patricia Mackenzie. When you first encounter Patricia Mackenzie , you might dislike her as she is painted as an alcoholic and a horrible mother but later on as the show progresses you get to understand her.I really enjoyed her character development , it was well paced. I lok forward to seeing more from her.

4. Wakio Mzenge as Kristina:img_20190124_155543

Now this was the best standout character in this series. We all just love to hate Kristina. Her character is the evil stepmother who tries to ruin Selina just to fully get her husband’s attention. She is evil, cunning and even goes to the extent to use witchcraft.IMG_20190124_155519.jpgHer character is very important in the story development and adds to the drama. Wakio Mzenge is an amazing actress and really stands out in this one. I feel like she is the best Kenyan actress I have encountered so far. Please watch this series to understand just how good her acting is.  She left me amazed the whole season . I really look forward to the direction her character will take in season 2.

5. Sangale Eunice as Lily:

img_20190124_155456If a villain character makes me hate them so much, the actor is doing an amazing job. Lily is a mean , nasty, jealous and cunning character who works in the Mackenzie house and is out to make Selina’s life a living hell. I loved her acting , it was really effortless and authentic. As a character Lily had a small influence on the story development but I feel like in the ending ,her character played a huge role in the drama.I really appreciate what her character brings to the series . It is quite enjoyable to watch her antics.

The Relationships

1. Nelson and Selina

screenshot_2019-01-22-16-53-16-86They are the main couple in this show . We get a really well paced, realistic and elaborate relationship build up. Celestine and Pascal have really good chemistry that really pays off well on their characters relationship. screenshot_2019-01-22-16-51-18-98The show does an amazing job on telling the different sides of their relationship from their epic meeting in episode one to their flourishing love in episode 60. I really enjoy this relationship , it was fun to watch.

2 .Selina and Patricia Mackenzie:

Screenshot_2019-01-22-16-59-21-46.pngSelina and Patricia have a well put blossoming friendship over the series run.  l love how both characters compliment and feed off each other. Both the character development of Selina and Patricia is very vital to the story and is fueled by their teamwork and friendship.  Patricia, who comes of as a snobbish character is softened and humanized by Selina. I know they will become a very strong and powerful duo.

3. Selina and her father:screenshot_2019-01-24-14-02-42-22

This relationship is very innocent, a father who loves and believes in his daughter and a daughter who adores and is loyal to her dad. This relationship set the mood for the whole series . Selina’s father may be blinded by his wife’s lies but still shows concern towards Selina through out whatever situation. I find this relationship to be very interesting, warm and authentic.

4. Patricia and her mother:

screenshot_2019-01-25-11-22-48-46When we first meet Patricia’s mother it magically explains Patricia’s issues to us. Her mother is simply a bully. She weirdly enjoys putting down her daughter all the time.screenshot_2019-01-25-11-21-24-43It is quite a sad relationship honestly as Patricia tries her best to please her mother all the time but unfortunately she never meets her expectations. This relationship makes you empathize with Patricia despite her snobbish attitude. I really appreciate that the writers and directors highlighted tis relationship as it was an important backstory .

Zoe and Reagan’s Coup d’etat:

screenshot_2019-01-22-17-15-52-04

In episode 42 we see Zoe and Reagan take over the house and the family company. This for me was sort of the climax of the series as all characters developed around this saga. Though it is a bit puzzling as to why Zoe and Reagan had to sort of steal the company from Patricia yet they were the only ones actively involved in running it .It is somewhat of a plot-hole to me but I will just blow it off as greed. Anyway, this event shook everybody’s stand and put most characters out of their comfort zone hence instigating character development. I for one loved how Patricia and Nelson got to really rise above from this occurrence. It was well paced and I look foward to seing how Zoe and Reagan handled it. Zoe and Reagan have really good chemistry and it helped make their antics smooth .

Themes:

a) Family

screenshot_2019-01-25-11-36-45-16.pngThe concept and theme of family is very dominant in the show. No family is perfect and the show goes on to prove just that. We all have ups and down as a family and it is expected to be that way. The Mackenzies being the main family go through so many tough times but still try their best to stay together. Except for Reagan who is a rich spoilt man with so much unnecessary greed.

b)  Money and Greed:

screenshot_2019-01-19-20-01-25-01The theme is evident especially with characters like Kristina and Lily. Kristina sells of her step daughter to go work in the city just to get all of her husbands attention. Her actions are so absurd considering she had to use witchcraft to achieve that.

screenshot_2019-01-22-16-52-20-98Lily on the other hand is completely obsessed with the rich, wanting to be one of them through whatever means.

screenshot_2019-01-22-16-55-11-67Collette , Nelson’s ex-fiancee , literally leaves him on the altar just because they lost all their fortune. I really never liked Collette’s character at all. She was too phony and materialistic. I also feel like the actress who plays Collette did not give her all in potraying the character, it always felt a bit forced.screenshot_2019-01-25-11-50-50-70Reagan and Zoe also go an extra mile of making their family memebers suffer just because of money and power. They team up to torment their family making sure they do not recover from the damage.

c) Love:

From the beginning of the show we see just how strong the bond is between Selina and her father is. The love Zakayo has for his daughter makes it impossible for him to see Selina doing wrong. He supports and cares for Selina alot. I like this kind of love ,it portrays family love .

screenshot_2019-01-19-20-02-30-42The blossoming love betwen Nelson and Selina is also quite captivating. It is raw, honest love that is sincere and genuine. I really enjoyed their love-line.

The Directing:

This show’s directing was quite outstanding. I love how they took ample time to set every scene. The directing was thorough making the set scene feel authentic. Rueben Odanga did an amazing job especially with bringing out amazing scenery.

Thoughts on the ending:

The ending of season 1 was very eventful and full of suspense. The drama build up was very interesting and we are all eager to now what will happen next. I really look forward to more character development especially the relationship between Nelson and Selina. The ending was very appropriate, I loved it.

screenshot_2019-01-22-16-57-25-51.pngFinal Verdict:

Selina is a properly paced Kenyan TV drama that features interesting themes of love, greed and power. It is very intruiging  and always leaves you wanting more.

Grade: A++

Ndani ya Cockpit 2 Wakadinali Album Review

img_20190105_213035This album by Wakadinali is of the best Kenyan albums of 2018. It is literally fire as it embodies hip hop in such an authentic way. I am pretty sure we all have heard of Wakadinali, especially if you frequently listen to Homeboyz Radio.

TIMG_20190105_213121.jpgThe group is mostly a duo, Scar and Domani Munga , as their third member Sewer Sydaa is inactive as he does their videos. Their main producers are Alex Vice and Ares66.They started rap in 2005 when they were kids in primary school. They have been rapping since then. They started pro music in 2016.

IMG_20190105_213137.jpgI first came across Wakadinali in 2016 when they were featured on the ‘Khaligraph Presents Cypher’ They really really stood out on that cypher, lyrically and with their flow. I immediately became a fan. I like their kind of Hip Hop, it is raw, hard-hitting and very fresh, reminds me of Jonny Vigeti of Kalamashaka.

Ndani ya Cockpit 2 dropped in 2018 and has been one of the best Kenya Hip Hop albums to date. I loved the album from the moment I first heard it, so fresh and raw. It is exactly what the Kenyan hip hop industry needs, authenticity.

IMG_20190105_213057.jpgThe album has 11 songs exclusive of the intro and outro . They had impressive collaborations with Khaligraph Jones, Dyana Cods and TNT (Timmy Blanco and Twenny Eights) . The album was produced by producers like KIID, Victor Jay, Klueless, Alex Vice Jeraw Beats with Ares66 being the executive producer.

I also loved their album cover, very artistically pleasing.

Okay, so I have been listening to this album for a while now and I am beyond in love. It is also available on Boomplay.

Collaborations

Better Days featuring Dyana Cods

This song is one of the best songs I have heard in a really long time. First of all, Dyana Cods has incredible vocals . Very smooth and pleasing to the ears. I really love what her voice did with the verse. The song is about hope for a better time and a better situation. The song also incorporates some Spanish lyrics , very sexy. I really love the message in this song, it touches on the fact that no situation is permanent, better days are coming.

Moja safi featuring Khaligraph Jones and TNT:

This song is so catchy and very lyrically intriguing. I love the simplicity of the hook on this song . TNT do not disappoint, they really go hard on the beat. I am really impressed with their lyrical content, it is not just English , it is hard-hitting rap. The O.G himself does represent well, we all know how hard KhaligraPh goes on a track, this was no different. I love listening to rap collaborations where everyone shines. The song has a really chill vibe to it. Amazing job by the producer.

Mtoto ni Mrembo featuring TNT:

This song is a really hype trap song . They once again feature TNT , a really talented hip hop duo . TNT go hard again on this song. They really go well with Wakadinali’s sound and style. I for one love the tempo of the song. I think Wakadinali did great on this song. I am sucker for punch lines and this song had lots of them. Impressed.

The beats on this album are just out of this world. The producers are pure magic. There are songs that stood out with really incredible trap beats ie:

Mangana Manangos :

This song is fire as  the beats hit hard like an earthquake. The lyrics are raw and graphic going well with the hard beats. It is a chill song with some lyrical slayage. Love it.

Ume Tii:

I also like this song. The producers do not disappoint with the hard hitting beats, Very simple hook that lets the lyrics and beats have a shine of their own.

Zoza Zoza :

Listen to this song once and it will be on loop in your head for a whole week. The beat drops hard with really catchy lyrics. It is quite an enjoyable song. I love how Scar and Domani compliment each other lyrically, it gives out amazing music.

If you have heard any of Wakadinali songs before , you are already aware of their style of rap , think Jonny Vigeti. I love how Wakadinali embraced diversity in this album by using different music styles. Really turned out well, ie:

Like uuh:

This song was uniquely done.Their lyrics softened with very smooth catchy lyrics.

Sitafadhali:

This also had a very unique sound to it and still Wakadinali bodied this song. It really showcased their scope of talent.

Ni hivi ama ni hivi :

This song had a unique sound too with an amazing beat drop on the hook. Amazing. Love what the producer did with the song.

The rest of the songs on this album also held up pretty well on their own . This album contains really high quality music. The level of production on Ndani ya cockpit 2 was way above the roof. I am really really glad to have listened to it. I love how Wakadinali are shaping the hip hop industry in Kenya. Please check out more of their music and cyphers on Youtube . This kind of talent is rare and un-measurable.

Final Verdict:

IMG_20190105_213152.jpg

Wakadinali is positively impacting the Kenyan Hip Hop industry and they are a force to reckon with. As a huge fan, I would really love to see them featured on the next Khali Cartel 3. Mad talent, amazing.

Final Grade : A+++

Huddah Cosmetics Review

IMG_20181224_215812.jpgHuddah Monroe , a Kenyan socialite turned entrepreneur has been a household name in kenya and Africa for a couple of years now. Her first mainstream appearance was when she represented Kenya in the Big Brother Africa reality show. She has successfully made her transition from a socialite to an entrepreneur.

IMG_20181224_215756.jpgHuddah Cosmetics began in 2016 and it has been running well since then. Shockingly, the Huddah lipsticks sold out just 10 days after the launch, which says a lot about the brand. Huddah Cosmetics has been growing since , expanding to a wider range of products. They now sell matte lipsticks in various shades, 2 eye-shadow palettes , eyeliner , lip-gloss and even makeup wipes.I am very impressed with the growth the brand has had . I am also very impressed with Huddah , as an individual and as a brand. Amazing.

I decided to try out the cosmetics and bought a few goodies from the Huddah Cosmetics line.

NB: I am not a makeup guru.

Process of ordering and delivery:

IMG_20181224_224353.jpg

Huddah Monroe has done a good job in bringing the consumer closer to the supplier. She provides a list of contacts you can access to get the products on every social media post. Huddah Cosmetics have an active website and are also available on Jumia. Even Huddah herself is really active with her cosmetics on social media which is a very good advertisement strategy as she has more than 1 million followers on Instagram. For me, I got my products from a physical shop. I called a contact on the distributors list. She was called Marion of SixFigure cosmetics. She was really nice, she gave me directions and was really helpful when I was picking up my package. I am very keen with the treatment one gets from staff and sellers during shopping, it sets the mood for the whole experience. Their customer service was amazing.

SixFigure Cosmetics at World Business Centre  1st floor.

What I got:

IMG_20181224_222359.jpgI bought the 24 eye-shadow palette at a retail price of 1500ksh. I got 2 matte lipsticks in the shade Vamp and Nimoh at a retail price of 1400ksh for both. I also got a lip-gloss in the shade Brown Sugar at a retail price of 600ksh.

The packaging:

The products come well sealed with some great packaging that is easy on the eyes. I was really impressed with the lip-gloss it is very unique with a quote on it that is really inspiring. The packaging boxes clearly explain the products, shades and ingredients. It is a beautiful peach color which is unique.

The products:

IMG_20181224_222456The 24 color eye-shadow palette:

The Huddah Cosmetics eye-shadow consist of 24 shades which are a mixture of mattes and shimmers. The shades are all named after African cities which is very thoughtful. There are 12 shimmer shades and 12 matte shades and they are placed in alternating columns.

IMG_20181224_224538The mattes are more brown with earth tones. Shades like Dakar, Juba and Douala are really pigmented. The mattes are buildable and have no fallout at all. I like how all the matte shades are unique and one can achieve a variety of looks with them.

IMG_20181224_172047.jpgAs for the shimmers for me they felt like they really stole the show. Huddah did not hold back when creating the shimmer shades. Djibouti, Kampala , Malabo are just some of my favorite shimmer shades. The shimmers are perfect for creating a blinding highlight look. I am very excited to play around with the shimmer shades.

The palette is amazing.I have to point out that it has a mirror which is also an important aspect. The tone of the shades properly compliment the dark African skin tones. Huddah has catered for the African skin. The shades are buildable with no fallout.

IMG_20181224_172536.jpgThe eye-shadow is very affordable and is of great quality. It is better than most foreign made eyes-shadow palettes with its range of shades. I highly recommend it.

The lipsticks:

I got the Huddah lipsticks in the shade Vamp and Nimoh. The lipstick goes on smoothly and dries matte. The lipsticks have a very sufficient applicator which needs only one scoop of product to fulfill its purpose hence avoiding wastage. Another plus is that the lipsticks smell like chocolate, so divine.

The shade Vamp is a deep red color that is both vibrant and sophisticated. It suites a variety of styles, from formal looks to more outgoing looks. I did a 8 hour wear test and it really held up nice. The lipstick does not smudge even after having several meals, it still holds up well.

IMG20181224170327.jpgIMG_20181224_222300.jpg

The shade Nimoh is a deep burgundy shade. It is bold and fierce going really well with statement fashion pieces. It can also be won to upgrade one’s makeup look from work day look to a night out look. I also did a 8 hour wear test wearing Nimoh. It really held up well and even after eating it was still on. I am very excited about this shade.

IMG_20181224_222316.jpg

IMG20181224141731.jpg

Lip-gloss:

I got the Huddah Cosmetics Lip-gloss in the shade Brown Sugar. My first try with the lip-gloss was not good but that was my fault because I went ham on the product. I learnt the trick with this gloss was using a little product and manipulating until it blends. I love how it is a perfect nude and keeps the lips moisturized. The lip-gloss is my new favorite. It is a very soft color which could go well with any and every occasion.

IMG_20181224_222341.jpg

Final Verdict:

Huddah Monroe did so well with her cosmetics line. The product are authentic , affordable and of good quality. She gives us a way to look good without having to hurt your pockets. Huddah Cosmetics is catering for something that was missing in the market. I am glad to be able to wear Kenyan owned and made make up products.

IMG_20181224_215835.jpgHuddah Cosmetics is a brand I look forward to seeing its growth and impact it will have on our rapidly growing Beauty Industry. I really believe in supporting our own and I have to congratulate Huddah Monroe for changing the Kenya Beauty Industry. She is running an empire like it should.

Grade : A

Huddah Cosmetics products can make really good Christmas gifts during this season of giving.

Merry Christmas
